175 Point Move In Checklist

This checklist is very important when you are renting or buying a place and can take a lot of time,  but it is time well invested.  You want to be sure to document any damage to your new home PRIOR to moving in.  It is imperative you go through this list with your landlord / real estate agent so you will not be charged with any damages prior to your occupancy.  Let’s get moving!

                    *This is the same checklist you should use when leaving a home.

Smoke Detectors

  • Proper number and placement are correct
  • New batteries (date should be written on them)

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

  • Proper number and placement are correct
  • New batteries (date should be written on them) and plugged in a functional outlet

All Doors (interior and exterior)

  • Locks work
  • How many keys are you given
  • Keys Work
  • List any damage to door (broken glass, weather stripping, locks, door frame)

All Closets

  • Shelving is in tack and sturdy
  • Lighting works
  • Clothing bars are secure
  • Floors and walls are clean
  • No musty smell

All Windows (interior and exterior)

  • All windows have locks
  • Note if there are curtains, rods, blinds or shades
  • All widows open and close correctly
  • All windows are clean and free of debris
  • All windows have screens (note if there are any tears)
  • Note any windows that are broken or have a crack
  • All window frames and gaskets are in good condition

All Flooring (including basement, entry ways, hallways and closets)

  • Hardwood is clean, not scratched and smooth
  • Carpet is free of stains
  • Carpet is played properly (not baggie or curled up in areas)
  • Carpet as worn down areas in high traffic areas
  • Carpet on steps is secure
  • Laminate is not torn
  • Laminate is not stained
  • Laminate is not curling up
  • Laminate is secure at seams
  • Tile is not broken
  • Tile grout is clean and free of mold/dirt
  • If there are area rugs be are to check under them for any damage
  • Floor is stable, no spots that give when you walk  (really check this out in the bathrooms)
  • Concrete floors in basement are in good condition

On All floors ALWAYS check for:

any signs of water damage (stains, mold, musty smell, cracks, discoloration, dampness

Kitchen

  • Ceilings are clean
  • Ceilings do not have cracks or chipping pain
  • Light fixtures are installed correctly
  • Walls are clean
  • Wall have no holes or marks (no tears in wall paper or wall paper falling down)
  • Walls do not have chipping paint (especially if lead paint was used in older homes)
  • Light fixtures work and are clean
  • Light fixtures have new bulbs
  • Light switches work
  • All electric outlets are covered
  • All electric outlets are in working condition
  • All electric outlets that work off of a light switch function correctly
  • Cabinet doors in good condition
  • Drawers in good condition and  work (no tracks are broken)
  • All hardware on cabinets and drawers on in good condition
  • Stove works
  • Stove has drip pans for each burner
  • Stove has all knobs in tack
  • Stove is hooked up properly to gas line
  • Exhaust fan works
  • Oven door is in good condition
  • Is the stove / oven clean
  • Is there a broiler pan
  • Sink is clean and all plugs are available
  • Sink has hot and cold water
  • Faucet does not drip
  • Hose is in good condition and does not drip
  • Pipes under sink are not leaking (note if there is prior water damage to the cabinet)
  • Garbage disposal is in working condition
  • Microwave  is in working condition and no damage
  • Dishwasher is clean and in working condition
  • Dishwasher doe not leak (note if there is prior water damage to floor or surrounding area)
  • Countertops are clean and free of cracks, tears or damage
  • Refrigerator is in working condition
  • Refrigerator is clean
  • Refrigerator door and all gaskets are in good condition
  • Refrigerator is not missing shelves or drawers
  • Freezer is in working condition
  • Freezer door and all gaskets are in good condition
  • Freezer has ice trays or ice machine
  • Freezer is hooked up to water line properly if there is an ice machine

Living Room

  • Ceilings are clean
  • Ceilings do not have cracks or chipping pain
  • Light fixtures are installed correctly
  • Walls are clean
  • Wall have no holes or marks (no tears in wall paper or wall paper falling down)
  • Walls do not have chipping paint (especially if lead paint was used in older homes)
  • Light fixtures work and are clean
  • Light fixtures have new bulbs
  • Light switches work
  • All electric outlets are covered
  • All electric outlets are in working condition
  • All electric outlets that work off of a light switch function correctly
  • Fireplace is in working condition
  • Flue and fire box have been cleaned
  • Screen is in tack on fireplace
  • Technology hook ups are in working condition (cable and internet)

Bedrooms

  • Ceilings are clean
  • Ceilings do not have cracks or chipping pain
  • Light fixtures are installed correctly
  • Walls are clean

  • Shower and tub are properly caulked
  • Toilet is in good condition (seat is secure and not cracks)
  • Toilet is not leaking
  • Toilet is clean and free of stains in the bowl
  • Toilet is secure to the floor and gasket is in good condition
  • Toilet tank fills up properly
  • Take not of shower rod and curtains are installed
  • Towel racks are secure
  • Toilet paper holder is secure
  • Mirror is in good condition with not cracks
  • Medicine cabinet is in good condition
  • Exhaust fan works

Garage /  Sheds

  • Note any shelving available
  • Garage door works
  • Garage door locks
  • Garage door light works
  • Garage door opener works and how many you have
  • Garage is free of trash and junk
  • Garage floor and walls are in good condition
  • Note any odd smells (gas, oil, chemicals)
  • Roof is in good conditions (shingles are in good condition and not missing)

Exterior

  • Roof is stable and in good condition (shingles are in good condition and not missing)
  • Siding / brick / stone are in good condition
  • Shutters are all in place and secured
  • Outside faucets do not leak
  • Outside electric outlets are properly covered and work
  • Outside lighting works
  • No foundation cracks or exterior wall cracks
  • Landscaping (flowerbeds weed-free, grass is cut, shrubs are trimmed, trees are stable)
  • Driveway does not have sever damage (pot holes, ruts, huge cracks)
  • Gutters cleaned

Exterior Living Areas

  • Please follow checklist for kitchen and living room

Systems – ensure all systems in the home are functional and safe.
